History of Grama Panchayat

On November 1, 1956, the state of Kerala was formed on the basis of language as per the recommendations of the State Reorganization Commission. Kerala came into existence by eliminating the northern and southern territories based on the mere myth that Kerala was created by Parasurama throwing an axe. It has been proven that in many parts of the coastal areas of Kerala, the sea has become land. Veliyancode is believed to be the area where the sea has become land.

In the famous Vanneri district of central Kerala, the evergreen and beautiful village of Veliyancode stands tall, reminiscing about the past, listening to the sound of the Arabian Sea and the rustling of the Narani river. Our country is progressing by witnessing unforgettable moments in Kerala history and contributing many talented and courageous people.

Although there are different opinions regarding the place name of our region, the poet Chamamoolanar in the Sangha epics describes the place Veliyam, the main town of Cheranad. In the second chapter of Chapatittupat, it is said that Umayavarambaran was the son of Nedum Cheralathan, Cheveliam Venmal. Cheveliam Venmal means the daughter of the ruler of Veliyam. This Veliyam is our country Veliyamcode.

When we examine the map of Kerala, we see a place with an estuary between Ponnani and Chetuva, which is Veliyamcode. There was a port here long ago. In the first volume of the Portuguese book written in 1550 AD, Malabar and Malabar The ports on the coast are also described. Based on the above description, Ponnani, Chetuva and Veliyankode were ports where ships moored.

Islam reached this coastal region at the very beginning of its spread in Kerala. The Veliyankode estuary provided a focal point for trade and commerce activities that took place by sea in the past. In the early days when Arabs and Europeans had trade relations with the coastal regions, coconuts, copra, coir and dried fish were collected from here and taken to foreign countries. Sailboats (Uru) were used at that time. In the past, the trade centers were connected by river. After the construction of the Kanoli Canal, Veliyankode became an important base in the water transport network of Kozhikode, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. The main trade in the interior was carried out by collecting goods from the forest market (Chavakkad) and Ponnani and bringing them through the Kanoli Canal by boat.

During the times when the Parangis came to our coastal areas, Manath Parampil Kunjimarakkar Shaheed was martyred by resisting a Parangi sailor who forcibly grabbed a woman from the shore and took her to the ship. This is mentioned in the book “Chatwagfatul Mujahedeen” written by Zainuddin Makhdoom. It is said that the Portuguese sailor Vasco da Gama came to Veliyangode before landing at Kozhikode. Ours is the land that witnessed the campaign launched by Tipu Sultan to capture Malabar from the British. The main road in this land built by Tipu Sultan at that time is known as Tipu Sultan Road and the place where he camped is also known as Thavalakulam. National Highway 17 passes through it.

The main places of worship of the Muslim believers are the Eramangalam Juma Masjid, Muhiuddin Mosque, Padathakkal Mosque, Ayyottichira Juma At Mosque, Thazhathel Padi Mosque, and Puzhakkarayile Mosque. The main Muslim places of worship in this panchayat are Umarkhazi Jaram, Kunjimarakar Shaheed Jaram, and Marakkar Thangal Palli. Veliyankode was known as “Chabilankuthu” in the Arab countries even before. Our country was known in the holy cities of Medina and Mecca through Umar Qazi, a famous scholar, spiritual teacher and Arabic poet who lived in the 18th century. Long before the independence movement was strengthened and the tax evasion movement was started, the oppressors who came to destroy the country should not pay taxes to the oppressors; he was a brave patriot who openly told the British that he did not want to pay taxes to you and called for tax evasion and law violation. His collection of Arabic poems written in praise of the last prophet has won international acclaim.

Pazhoor Balakyashnan Nair (Elikkatta Veedu) of Perumudissery, who was also a freedom fighter, is a person who deserves special mention. Dr. K.M. Muhammed, former head of the Arabic department of Kozhikode University, Dr. K.M. Abdullah, retired ortho surgeon of Vadakkara Govt. Hospital, and Dr. K.M. Abdu Rasheed, former registrar of Kannur University are also personalities who deserve special mention. Alavihaji C. P. Ali, who retired as a Subedar Major after serving in the Indian Army for many years, is a person who deserves special mention. Chenanas Cheriya Shankaran Namboothiripad, a painter and Tantri of several Hindu temples, is a personality who deserves special mention.

In the history of our country, previous generations have had to suffer the oppression of landlords. The system of giving wages as a gift was in force at that time. The watchman and the lease are alien to the present generation. It is also a historical fact that the evils of feudalism were part of the social system. But unlike other regions, in our country, the rich, middle class and poor sections of the population have lived together with great unity and religious tolerance throughout all periods. We can proudly say that there has never been any communal unrest or communal clashes in our area. The fact that the entire people, forgetting their communal differences, participate in the Veliyankode Chandanakudam Nercha, which has been celebrated for ages, and the festivals at Kannenkavu and Panikkankavu in the Pathinettarakav are silver records of our secular traditional history that we have preserved over the years.

Let's take a look at the administrative history of the panchayat. Even before independence, Veliyankode Panchayat was formed. Veliyankode village was the only part of the Veliyankode Panchayat that functioned in this manner even after independence and during the time of the old Malabar District Board. Thozhuvanil Kunjikuttan Menon, V Ramunni Nambiar, P M Cherunni Koya Thangal, Koladi Unni, M.T Muhammed (Aanakathu) and O.K Mammunni were the past presidents. In 1664, the Perumpadappu Panchayat was formed by merging the villages of Veliyankode, Eramangalam, Ayrur and Perumbadappu. Sri Koladi Govindankutty Menon was elected as the president and Hassankutty was elected as the vice president. Later, the Perumpadappu Panchayat was divided into two and Perumpadappu and Eramangalam Panchayats came into existence. Hassankutty was elected as the President of Perumpadappu Panchayat and Koladi Govindankutty continued as the President of Eramangalam Panchayat. Later, the name of the Panchayat was changed to Veliyankode Panchayat and the Panchayat office was kept in Eramangalam. The Administrative Committee with Koladi as the President and Kaliyat Hassan as the Vice President continued till 1980. In mid-1980, K. Koya was elected as the President and K.P. Abu as the Vice President and later in 1981, Mr. P. P. Beerankutty took over as the President. In the elections held in 1989, P. V. Venugopal Panicker and P.P. Ibrahim Kutty became the presidents respectively and Muthukoyathangal became the vice president. After the decentralization of power, in the elections held in 1995, P.P. Ibrahim Kutty and A.K. Muhammadunni continued as presidents respectively. In the elections held in 2000, due to the equal number of members being elected to both the fronts, the candidates contesting for the post of president received equal votes and Shajira Manaf was elected as the president through a draw. After the elections held in 2005, A.K. Muhammadunni took over as the president. After these two years, N.K. Zainuddin took over as the President. On 19-03-2009, a notice of no-confidence motion was given and the no-confidence motion was discussed in the Governing Body meeting held on 1.04.2009 to consider the motion. As 8 members abstained from the no-confidence vote and 9 members voted in favor of the no-confidence motion, the current President N.K. Zainuddin was removed from the post of President. Later, in the presidential election held on 5 May 2009, Kallatel Shamsu was elected as the president. After the election held in 2010, a new governing body took office on 02.11.2010 and Kallatel Shamsu was elected as the president in the presidential election held on 8.11.2010. K.K. Beerankutty took over as the president in the presidential election held on 10.02.2012, replacing the position of Kallatel Shamsu, who voluntarily resigned on 15.01.2012. During the period 2015-2020, Mrs. Premaja Sudheer and Mrs. Suhara Babu were the Presidents and during the period 2020-2025, Kallatel Shamsu was the President. Currently, Mrs. Babitha Naufal is the Panchayat President.
